Transforming traditional stories into art and weaving the landscape of Tai Hang
The crisscrossing streets of Tai Hang, the century-old fire dragon incense, historical buildings, and the daily life of the neighborhood weave a unique rhythm of life. This time, 'Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang' invites the participating artists of 'Arts in Tai Hang' to return to Tai Hang and explore its characteristics through art once again.
Weaving artist Siu Yau continues her 'Arts in Tai Hang' creation, exhibiting classic Hakka floral band blessing patterns in the form of alternative kites in the Tai Hang community——'Olives' (olive-shaped, diamond patterns), bringing a new weaving work, Form and Color Weaving, to connect the historical memories and community imagination of Tai Hang.
Diverse hands-on experiences to explore Tai Hang with the five senses
Mixed media artist Cheng Chi-kin and paper art sculpture creation unit Hira Hira will also return to Tai Hang, hosting craft workshops themed around Tai Hang's culture and community stories:
i) 'Tasty Handmade Incense Workshop in Tai Hang' -- Artist Cheng Chi-kin will guide participants to make natural handmade incense using tea dregs from cha chaan teng and coffee grounds from specialty coffee shops in Tai Hang, preserving the community's daily scents as olfactory memories to take away.
ii) 'Tai Hang Divine Beast Paper Sculpture Workshop' -- Hira Hira will lead participants to hand-knead a guardian beast inspired by the stories of Tai Hang, bringing home a warm blessing and protection.
iii) 'Mini Fire Dragon Zhazuo Workshop in Tai Hang' -- Artist Yiu Ming-shan will combine traditional Zhazuo craftsmanship with contemporary craft materials to create mini fire dragons, allowing participants to rediscover the century-old fire dragon tradition and folk crafts of Tai Hang.
Tours and self-guided tours to explore the past and present of Tai Hang
'Revisit Tai Hang' offers guided tours that introduce Tai Hang from the perspectives of architecture, community, and cultural heritage:
i) 'Tai Hang Architecture and Heritage Tour' -- Led by architectural research scholar Dr. Lai Chun-wai, this tour focuses on the diverse architectural styles of Tai Hang, from its development as a Hakka village to the present day, discussing how historical buildings promote 'old and new integration' and community vitality.
ii) 'Tai Hang Community and Cultural Heritage Tour' -- Led by veteran broadcaster Yip Wing-sze, this tour visits the Lotus Palace, old village houses, unique small shops, and restaurants, recounting the century-old transformation of Tai Hang, the fire dragon tradition, diverse ethnic stories, and community bonds.
